During the summer of 2008, Ruth traveled to Huánuco, Peru for the first time at the special request of the International Justice Mission to provide education on sexual assault evidence collection to community leaders in health care and law enforcement.

She returns each year with a multidisciplinary team to provide trainings in Huánuco and Lima on the maltreatment of women and children. This is a collaborative effort of the International Justice Mission in Washington DC, The River Church Community in San Jose, California and Paz y Esperanza in Huánuco and Lima. The mission supports Paz y Esperanza, a Christian human rights organization, as they work tirelessly to fight against an epidemic of sexual violence against children and domestic violence against women.

Their passion for seeking justice is truly an inspiration.

The team provides trainings for lawyers, investigators, forensic physicians, therapists, community organizers and pastors, supporting their efforts to make systemic changes to the justice system in Huánuco. While in Lima, they provide similar trainings and meet with Peruvian dignitaries to support the work of Paz y Esperanza.

Each year the mission continues in trainings and to encourage the amazing healthcare and legal professionals in Huánuco and Lima. They are passionate in their work as they strive to improve justice for women and children and are truly an inspiration.

Plans for Peru each year are very exciting. They are currently making arrangements to bring child sexual abuse experts with them to accelerate the trainings. More to come on this exciting collaborative effort to address child maltreatment in Huánuco, Peru.
